UPDATE 20TH MARCH 2020
Due to the current Covid-19 situation, we have cancelled all events in March and April 2020 but have added some new dates which can be seen below. We will review these as necessary. Should you book on any of our workshops and we are unable to run them we will follow our normal practice of offering you an alternative date or a full refund.
Welcome to our workshop page. Here you will find a range of photographic events to help you become more proficient with your camera, and produce great pictures that you will be proud to put on display.
We keep our workshops as small groups of up to 10 people, so that we can give you attention and answer your questions as we go along. We have the advantage that on most of these sessions there will be two instructors, myself and my wife, Jo.
To book on any of the workshops, have a look at the descriptions below then click on the 'book online' button, and follow the instructions. After booking and payment, details of exact times, meeting points, what to bring etc, will be sent to you via email.
Also, gift cards are now available for you to purchase for that budding photographer in your life! Click on the GIFT CARD/SHOP tab in the main menu and follow the instructions. You can purchase a gift card as part payment for a workshop with the remainder being paid in cash or via banking app on your phone on the day.
Photo Processing Workshop
Date: Thursday 25th June
This workshop will the cover the basics from transferring your RAW photos to the computer, where to begin with the array of tools, sliders and effects in processing software, what you ‘should’ and ‘shouldn’t’ do to your images, and how to give them the finishing touches.
Using mainly the industry leader, Adobe's Photoshop and Lightroom, we will talk you through a simple workflow to start you on your way to getting the most from the software. and also look at alternative software, some of which is free to download!
You will need to bring a laptop or tablet with photo processing software already installed and ready to use. We will provide some images for you to practice on, but please feel free to bring one or two images of your own that you have taken, for example a landscape or family portrait, if you would like some help in editing them.
We will have a 10 minute tea break part way through, and this is included in the price.
Please note that Nigel Newton Photography is NOT an official ambassador for Adobe or any other software provider, and we do NOT receive any payment or rewards of any kind from these companies.
Our aim in this workshop is to help other photographers like you to learn and enjoy editing their work and create great images.

What you will learn:
Duration: 3 hours Start Time: Approx. 9:30am Terrain: Easy
Children's Photography Workshops (Ages 8-16)
Dates: Saturday 6th June, Saturday 1st August, Saturday 19th September.
Price: £40 - (Includes drink and snack/ice cream at the cafe)
On our Children’s Photography Workshops, I will be assisted by my wife, Jo (so you actually get two instructors for the price of one)! We request that your child/children be accompanied by either yourself or your own designated responsible adult. That adult may well learn a few things too, so in effect you’re getting two (or more) participants for the price of one as well as two instructors!
The workshop takes place in Moss Bank Park and includes a visit to The Cafe to review our achievements before heading out for the final part of the workshop.
Ideally, the children should bring a bridge camera, mirrorless camera or DSLR, (and a tripod if they have one), but there is still a lot to learn even with a smartphone! We have 2 DSLRs available to borrow on the day if necessary.
The children will learn to be confident with the camera controls, how to compose a pleasing image, how to blur backgrounds to draw attention to the subject, the basics of 'the exposure triangle', and more.
After booking and payment, details of exact times, meeting points, what to bring etc, will be sent to you via email.
Please do get in touch if none of these dates are convenient and we can make other arrangements if possible. We would not want enthusiastic budding photographers to miss out!
Duration: 3 hours Start Time: Approx. 9:30am Terrain: Easy
NB: Both instructors have DBS certification.
Walker Fold Photography Workshop
Date: Saturday 25th July
Price: £50 (includes a donation to the Woodland Trust)
For this workshop we have a great opportunity of working in collaboration with the Woodland Trust, who in recent years purchased the Smithills Estate, north west of Bolton.
With a beautiful range of landscapes including woodland, river, views of Winter Hill and the surrounding area, Walker Fold is the perfect location to learn the photography skills and techniques used in these environments. Depending on the weather conditions on the day, it will include the chance to capture panoramic views from Burnt Edge.
The workshop is geared towards Beginner to Intermediate level photographers, and we will look at the exposure triangle, composition, ways to photograph water, and intimate landscape photography.
A general level of fitness is necessary to cope with moderate terrain which is slippery, uneven and strenuous in one or two places. You will need to be suitably attired, and we recommend wellies as it gives the option to go in the river, and there is a substantial amount of mud on the paths through the woods.
Duration: 3 hours: Start Time: Approx. 9:30am: Terrain: Moderate
Spring Photography Workshop at Tockholes Woods

Learn how to capture great images of Spring woodland on this workshop in a popular woodland near Bolton. We will talk you through some of the techniques, tips, and tricks that we use to create iconic, ‘British’ woodland scenes. After a brief coffee/cake break at the café, which is included in the price, we’ll visit another part of the woods where we’ll share our top tips for photographing tree corridors, flowing rivers and waterfalls.
The workshop is designed for Beginner to Intermediate level photographers, and will help you understand the exposure triangle, composition, and creative techniques to add to your photography skills.
Duration: 3-3.5 hours: Start Time: Approx. 9:00am: Terrain: Easy to Moderate
